Riedel H2O Whiskey/Double-Old Fashioned Glass, Set of 2 Review

The simplicity and beautifully classic lines of these glasses make them very attractive and they have a classy appearance. They seem rather delicate, but have held up to use very well so far. The lead-free crystal ensures that the glasses do not have even the slightest imperfection, and the walls of the glass blend seamlessly into the base making the overall impression very elegant.

I’ve only used the glasses a few times so far, so I’m not sure about their longevity, and the mixed reviews here about their durability leave me mildly concerned about how long they will last.

I use them primarily for drinking single malt on the rocks and they serve the purpose admirably. The size is perfect for a double shot of scotch over a nice stack of ice. I like them enough to get more to create a nice set, but the price point is a slight deterrent to getting more right now. However, I expect I will get more as soon as an opportunity arises.

I recommend them very highly. I hope you found this review helpful.

What better place is there to stop by on a 70 degree Tuesday, March evening than at the local microbrew bottleshop? In the mood to pick up something good for embibing while watching the hockey game tonight, I picked up a few known good picks and then, out of the corner of my eye, spied a new addition in the cooler selection roster. Could it be?

Yes, it was, one of the microbrews I’ve been wanting to try but haven’t had the $40.00 to cough up for a whole 24 bottle case (crazy Pennsylvania liquor laws). Troegs Nugget Nectar has been high on my wish list lately, and luckily my local bottle shop just got a supply in and decided to stock it in the general assembly section of the cooler row.

Troegs is an independent microbrewery located in Harrisburg, PA and has long been known, especially amongst us Pennsylvanians, to put out some very high quality and tasty microbrews over the years (one of my seasonal favorites being the Christmastime issued Mad Elf, but more on that one later).

Anyway, I picked up two 12 ounce bottles and, needless to say, by the second bottle I just had to post a few notes on this very impressive Imperial IPA offering (to be accurate, the label touts this as an Imperial Amber). Pouring my slightly chilled bottle into a standard 10 ounce beer mug I am greeting with pungent hop aromas wafting up, out and all around the mug, sink basin and nearly the entire kitchen area in which it was poured. This one really eminates an evident “have you been drinking?” clue even if you’ve only just poured one into a glass to sit and admire the sight of it.

The sight of it however is not its strongest pint…I mean point (Freudian slip there, sorry). It did boast a fairly respectable head of about two fingers that stuck around for maybe three or four minutes. But the thing that really struck me was the absolute clarity of this brew. A lighter amber color in my mug, it was essentially a crystal clear presentation, carbonated bubbles streaming everywhere. It reminded me much more of maybe a Yuengling lager than a finely produced craft beer.

When it came to actually finally tasting it, after all of the previously written thoughts swirling through my mind, it was heaven on earth. This is truly nectar of the gods. As I’ve sample many stronger IPA’s in my time, and given the aroma, I was expecting a more standard run of the mill grapefruity type IPA. This one gave off the grapefruit flavors but not in a most astringent manner. There was a malty, almost creamy backbone there that very classily offset some of the commonality of the boasted high level IBU’s (93ish IBU’s as per the bottle label for those keeping track).

Lacing on my mug was highly prevalent and it transferred well to a somewhat slick feel on the palate but not in an annoyingly obtrusive way. A pleasant aftertaste of sip #1 quickly led to #2 and so on.

On the quick, I would say I could picture myself downing a six pack of these on a hot summers day while doing yard work. But upon closer inspection of the bottle, the 7.5% ABV rating would make me seriously consider otherwise. This one is extremely drinkable, almost to a sessionable point but it’s due to it’s incredible balance of all factors involved.

Despite my initial predispositions, and Nugget Nectar’s predominant assault on the ol’ olfactory, Troeg’s Nugget Nectar doesn’t evolve to obscene extremes in any one particular area except for it’s highly overall enjoyable drinkability. My impression is one of a high expectation, leading to complete validation with some meandering surprises along the way, a microbrew with an amiable character and one that I will remember and look for in the months and years to come. I can honestly say that I will be seeking out an entire case (yes at the $40.00 price tag) on my next visit to one of my local area distributors and I will highly recommend that you do too if given the chance.

Troegs Nugget Nectar checks in as a 8.25 rated microbrew in my opinion. Go out and try it today!

The recent health claims that wines have antioxidants in them that may block free radicals, prevent heart disease, cancer, and other conditions associated with aging seems to have some validity. Polyphenol, catechin, and cholesterol-reducing resveratrol are found predominately in red wines in various degrees. One suggestion as to why some of these antioxidants are present in red wines is that grapes that have been distressed during their growth will exhibit the highest level of antioxidants. Red-skinned grapes seem to have better growing success in less temperate climates but exhibit the effects of stressful weather conditions in the form of higher levels of resveratrol. Before all you wine enthusiasts start shouting, “I told you so!” let me point out that many of the same antioxidant benefits can also be found in dark beers, too.

What low-carbohydrate dieters are most concerned about with wine, however, is its carbohydrate count, loosely a function of the wine’s residual sugar content. Although residual sugar levels are often made available by vintners and are a good indication as to the possible dryness or sweetness of a wine (the higher the number, the sweeter the wine), we can’t, unfortunately, extrapolate the carbohydrate count of the wine from this figure without a full lab analysis.

Some wine-related Web sites say that there are no carbohydrates in dry wine, a glaring example of people who have no idea of the mechanics of fermentation. The process of converting sugars to alcohol and carbon dioxide during fermentation is limited by the attenuation of the yeast or the manipulation of the fermentation by the vintner. In order for a wine to have no carbohydrates in it, it would have to be pure alcohol, in other words, distilled. Of course at that point, the liquid would no longer be wine, but brandy or cognac. All–and I repeat–all wines, including dry wines, have some residual sugar left behind after the fermentation process ends. Residual sugar equals carbohydrates. If it were possible to use fermentation to convert a sugary liquid into a drink that was free of carbohydrates, the process of distillation would be a meaningless procedure. Only after distillation, when the resultant liquid is transformed into ethyl alcohol (ethanol), will a once-fermented liquid truly become carbohydrate-free.

You might notice while shopping for wine that some fruit-blended wines actually carry a nutritional analysis statement on them. For any wine with an alcohol content of less than 7% by volume, the Food and Drug Administration actually has jurisdiction over the nutritional labeling of the product. However, the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) has jurisdiction over the mandated government warnings that are also found on the labels of these wines and of all alcohol-based products. This is one of the few times that the FDA gets involved in the realm of spirited beverages with the TTB. You’ll also find nutritional information on ciders under 7%.

What kind of a margin of error does the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau allow in the measurement of carbohydrates in wine? From the TTB ruling: Statements of carbohydrates and fat contents [on wine labels or advertising materials] are acceptable provided the actual carbohydrate or fat contents, as determined by ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, the former alcohol trade regulatory agency) lab analysis, are within a reasonable range below, but in no case more than 20% above, the labeled amount.

If you’re on a low-carbohydrate diet and enjoy the occasional pressings from “the noble grape,” the following list of wines with their carbohydrate counts should help you keep your daily carb intake in check:

Barton & Guestier

Cabernet Sauvignon (’02) 5 oz 1.70 g Chardonnay (’02) 5 oz 1.10 g French Tom Cabernet Sauvignon (’02) 5 oz 1.30 g French Tom Chardonnay (’02) 5 oz 1.10 g French Tom Merlot (’01) 5 oz 1.40 g

Ecco Domani

Cabernet Sauvignon (’01) 5 oz 4.00 g Chianti (’01) 5 oz 3.60 g Merlot (’01) 5 oz 4.05 g Pinot Bianco (’96) 5 oz 3.50 g Pinot Grigio (’02) 5 oz 3.15 g

Situated in west central New York, the Finger Lakes region is an ideal destination for anyone.  Families, couples, senior citizens, and college kids will all feel at home here.  It’s a four season area with numerous outdoor activities and a natural bounty derived from a delightful mix of elements.

The Finger Lakes themselves are a phenomenon.  They are actually glacial lakes, formed thousands of years ago by retreating glaciers which carved the earth.  Looking at a map, the lakes look like fingers – long and narrow, stretching from north to south.  There are 11 in the region by our count, with the two largest, Cayuga and Seneca, forming the centerpiece.

The region is filled with valleys, rolling hills, and spectacular scenery, especially in autumn.  Charming small towns abound, and there’s a sense of artistry here, perhaps inspired by the surroundings.  To pinch a phrase from the Finger Lakes Visitor’s Guide, it’s a scenic partnership of Napa Valley and Scotland here.  I’ll take their word for it, but if Scotland is half as pretty as the Finger Lakes, I’d like to go tomorrow!

It’s easy to get to the Finger Lakes region, which is situated just south of the New York State Thruway (I-90).  You’re about a 90 minute drive from either Rochester or Syracuse, two underrated cities that warrant a visit.

Canandaigua Wine Trail

Canandaigua is a real slice of Americana, with an historic downtown and all sorts of unique places to visit.  Our first eagerly anticipated stop was the New York Wine and Culinary Center, on Main Street in Canandaigua.

The NYWCC is a perfect place to get acquainted with New York wine and food.  The emphasis here is to educate visitors about New York’s rich wine, food, and culinary traditions.  You can take a class here, enjoy a wine dinner, learn what a sommelier does, and much more.  There’s an educational theater and a hands on kitchen where you can create your own masterpiece.  Also, don’t miss the New York Garden located outside the building.  Depending on the season, you might find grapes ready to pick, apples, tomatoes, or any number of other native crops.

Wilhelmus Estate Winery

Open since 2007, Wilhelmus Estate Winery is the pride of Buon and Karen Keunen, who named the winery after Buon’s father.  We loved their Cayuga White, a light, fruity white offering.  Even better in our estimation was the Free Run Traminette.  “Free run” is a term used to describe the situation when the grape picking process ruptures the skin of some of the grapes.  The juice from those grapes collects in the transport containers, resulting in a high concentration of sugars, fruit esters, and tannins.  We particularly enjoyed the spiciness of this wine, and thought it would be a superb companion for a pork dish or a stir fry.

Just a general comment about these Finger Lakes wineries … each of them offers unbelieveable scenery.  A better word is stunning. It’s like Mother Nature’s best here, with fresh clean air and valleys cascading down to the lakes.  The soil is rich, the climate invigorating.  You really need to experience this area to truly feel all it offers to your senses.

Finger Lakes Wineries In Naples

At the extreme southern end of Canandaigua Lake, you’ll find the charming village of Naples and the Arbor Hill Grapery and Winery. Arbor Hill is about an inviting a place as can be.  The main building looks kind of like a country cottage, white clapboard with a big sign above the awning.

Once inside, it becomes even more inviting.  There’s a beautiful gift shop where you can peruse all sorts of Finger Lakes specialty products, from grape pies to apparel to housewares.  But the star here is the wine.

Our first taste was one of Arbor Hill’s newer wines, the Vergenne.  We hadn’t heard of this style before, and it’s reminiscent of a Riesling in some ways, especially the crisp finish.  We learned this wine is made with a grape that’s part Lambrusco, so essentially this is a white wine made with a red grape.  A new one on us, but decidedly tasty!  And at less than $11 a bottle, it’s a best buy.

Another variety we’d never tried before was Arbor Hill’s Sparkling Chardonnay.  Dry like a Chardonnay but effervescent like a good sparkling wine, it’s a perfect match of two styles.

We absolutely loved Onnalinda White, a mix of Cayuga White, Traminette, and Vidal.  We expected this to be sweet, but it’s only mildly so, an easy drinker that joined us for our trip home.

Imagine Moore and Widmer

With a unique name and a gorgeous setting, Imagine Moore Winery was next on our list.  They are housed in a restored barn that dates back to Civil War times, with a panoramic view of Naples Valley from the wrap around deck. We even encountered a few olive trees just off the patio.

Here’s where you should come to buy a great dry Riesling.  The name, Joy, fits perfectly.  The mix of fruit flavors and aromas is everything a Riesling should be.  Of all the wines at Imagine Moore, don’t miss this one.

Since we’re always searching for wisdom, we felt compelled to try Imagine Moore’s Cabernet Franc.  Its name is really Wisdom.  And it was a smart choice indeed, a tasty, complex, fruit forward wine that we felt would pair well with pasta dishes.  P.S. – it does!

This was an ideal spot for a bit of afternoon relaxing.  Words don’t do the setting justice.  The air is fragrant and fresh, with a warm valley breeze.  We immediately knew why so many things grow here, as it seems this area is blessed with all the natural resources required.  Also of note, Imagine Moore partners with the Brown Hound Bistro for wine tasting dinners and events.  We didn’t make one, but we can’t fathom how you’d go wrong.

Last but certainly not least on our day trip to Naples was a visit to Widmer Wine Cellars.  Widmer is one of the largest and most successful wineries in the United States.  You may be aware of the Manischewitz brand – it’s produced here.

We highly recommend a tour of this bustling, modern facility.  It’s about 45 minutes in length, and you’ll see everything.  Of course, you’ll end up in the tasting room and gift shop!  When you’re here, try Widmer’s Lake Niagara Harvest Blush, an easy sipper you’ll want to take to your next picnic.  The gift shop is equally appealing, with shelves stacked with wine gifts, jellies, juices, and gourmet treats.

Final Thoughts

New York’s Finger Lakes area is an ideal destination for wine travel lovers, outdoor enthusiasts, and artisans.  There’s a little something for everyone here, including spectacular scenery and a peaceful, relaxed pace.  Whether it’s a family vacation or just a weekend getaway, you’re sure to find the Finger Lakes a welcoming travel destination.

I introduce myself to you wine lovers some of the best wines in the world, without being obliged to go bankrupt.

If you are familiar with my articles, you know that my area of expertise is French and Italian wines. I am glad of this passion for wine, because after extensive research I have come to a conclusion, without prejudice, to get to this stage some of the wines smooth, delicious and impressive in the world by these two countries. For peoplenot agree with me, do not worry, I respect your taste. However, I present the challenge to prove me wrong!

Gevrey Chambertin is a small community or a small incorporated town in the Bourgogne region in France known for its vineyards and production as one of the more famous and exquisite wines from France. This perfect wine-producing area, south of Dijon, you use the site, consisting of argillaceous limestone gravel to grow some of the bestPinot Noir in the region.

Gevrey Chambertin is conceived as a good wine ranges as "high", a high-end wine, so to speak. It 'a wine that is very impressive and the taste higher. Deeply colored, that tickles the senses, when he drank. It tastes of cherry, which pleased the palate nicely.

Chambertin Clos de Beze, Gevrey Chambertin is one of the best and the most expensive. But even if I did not want producers economicthe market, I would expect that fully satisfied with the average price of this wine to be. Production, with 2.3 million bottles a year, I'm sure will not find it difficult to get a good set of choices that remain friendly to your wallet for your favorite wine shop or wine cellar.

This wine would pair to the point of meat grilled or roasted.
